Dorset Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited has completed work at the 190 year old Swanage Pier Marine Villas, as part of the Swanage Pier Trust’s restoration project. The Grade II Listed Building has been restored to its former Georgian glory, and now offers visitors a new exhibition space, shop, and café with a stunning glass extension. Internal structural alterations have included the creation of new toilets and a commercial kitchen. A platform lift has been installed for access to the first-floor Swanage Pier Trust offices, as well as the Purbeck Coast Community Radio Station which is due to be launched later this year. Sympathetic repairs combined with modern alterations to the structure of the building have included the introduction of load bearing glass floor panels enabling visitors to view the historic saltwater baths below the ground floor. New joinery fittings and doors, a reception area, exhibition spaces and a shop have been created, as well as a complete redecoration internally and externally.
The external toilet block has benefitted from structural alterations to create disabled toilet facilities, and internal layout configuration changes now provide modernised male public toilets, including drainage alterations, new sanitary ware, electrical and piped service alterations. A new doorway through external solid stone walls now provides access to the toilets.
The project has received funding from a number of sources, including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Coastal Community Fund, The Fine Family Foundation, Dorset County Council, Purbeck District Council, Swanage Town Council, trusts and foundations.
Although Swanage Pier itself has existed since 1859, the current pier was opened in 1897, with the Swanage Pier Trust acquiring it 1994. The Marine Villas originally contained new, fashionable cold salt-water baths, before being converted into a private dwelling.
Rob Hooker, Director of Greendale Construction Limited, said:“We have been delighted to work with Swanage Pier Trust and Studio Partington Architects on this exciting and historically important restoration of the Swanage Pier Marine Villas. The newly re-opened building will bring back to life this stunning Georgian building, bringing many new visitors to the area who will not only be able to learn more about its history, but will also benefit the town’s businesses and the local economy in general.”
Ben Adeney, Chief Executive, Swanage Pier Trust commented: “Thanks to the incredible support of the local community, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Trusts, Foundations and local authority, we are delighted that the Swanage Pier restoration project is now complete.
